Singapore “Warms Up” Data Centers – Can Vietnam Learn from It?

In June 2023, Singapore officially announced a new standard aimed at optimizing energy efficiency for Data Centers (DCs) operating in tropical climates. Notably, this standard proposes raising the operating temperature to 26°C, instead of maintaining the traditional “deep cooling” at 22±2°C.

The Foundation of the New Standard & Practical Results

This breakthrough standard was issued by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) of Singapore. It is the result of long-term research in collaboration with tech giants like Huawei, Keppel, and Facebook. Not just theoretical, the standard has proven effective in practice:

  • Practical testing: Digital Realty has successfully applied it and recorded positive results. By simply increasing the temperature by 2°C, the system saved 2–3% of cooling energy.
  • Impressive figures: According to IMDA’s calculations, every 1°C increase can help reduce cooling electricity by 2–5% — equivalent to saving about 2% of the total power consumption of the entire data center.
  • Government pioneering: Currently, GovTech Singapore is also actively testing and implementing this “warming up” solution right within the government’s own data centers.

Is It Time for Vietnam to Change the “22°C Mindset”?

Looking globally, according to the 2024 ASHRAE standard (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), the recommended temperature range for IT equipment in data centers has practically been expanded to 18–27°C.

Returning to Vietnam, a country with tropical climate characteristics similar to Singapore, maintaining data centers at traditionally low temperatures consumes an enormous amount of electricity. In the context of increasing pressure on operating costs (especially with electricity price fluctuations) and sustainable development becoming a mandatory trend, the question arises: Should we boldly consider adjusting the inherent “22°C mindset”?
