Building a Data Center in 8 Months – Hard to Believe but True!

Data Center (DC) construction time is currently a major headache in the Vietnamese market. Many projects take 2 to 3 years to complete, and some major providers even spend up to 5 years without being able to put them into operation. So, what is the breakthrough solution to keep up with the digital speed era?

Let’s look at an impressive example from our neighboring country Malaysia with the MY-01 project. This is the first prefabricated modular data center completed in a mere 8 months. This information was recently shared by expert Paul Mah, bringing a completely new perspective on network infrastructure deployment.

MY-01 Project Details: A Modular Data Center

Built in the Sedenak Tech Park, Malaysia, MY-01 boasts a modern 3-story structure with notable technical specifications:

  • Impressive capacity: Reaches 16.2MW with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of < 1.4.
  • Cooling technology: Utilizes an air cooling system (Fan Wall system), combined with a thermal storage tank and VRLA batteries.
  • Expansion vision: In Phase 2, this DC will deploy an additional 500 racks with a capacity of up to ~130kW.

Lightning Speed: Building a Data Center is Like “Playing with Lego”

The secret behind this 8-month record is the use of pre-assembled modules from the BrightRay factory. Up to 90% of the components, from steel frames and cable trays to equipment, are manufactured, tested, and carefully packed before being transported to the site for “assembly.” On-site work primarily focuses on assembly, equipment connection, and pouring fireproof concrete.

Thanks to this method, the construction schedule is shortened to an unbelievable degree:

  • ⏱️ It only took 70 days to complete the foundation.
  • ⏱️ It took exactly 22 days to finish assembling the entire 3-story structure.
  • ⏱️ The total time took only about 3 months to achieve a complete structural framework.

Notably, according to a BrightRay representative, with this model, they are fully capable of completing a massive Data Center with a capacity of 30–60MW in just 6 months.

Other Interesting Highlights of the Project

  • Spacious environment: Unconstrained like traditional container modules, MY-01 features a ceiling height of 6-8 meters, providing an extremely ideal operating space.
  • Supply chain: The project prioritizes the maximum use of domestic Malaysian components.
  • Cooling innovation: Phases 2 & 3 of the project will transition to using Dry Cooler technology, replacing traditional cooling towers.

Is This Model Suitable for Vietnam?

With superior deployment speed and optimized technology, the prefabricated modular Data Center is truly a revolutionary concept. With such speed and technology, could a modular Data Center be the perfect answer for Vietnam’s network infrastructure in the booming era of AI and Cloud?
